Storm catches cats out

CATS are renowned for their dislike of water and loud noise, so the hailstorm that swept across the city on Anzac Day caused havoc at the Cat Protection Society of NSW in Newtown.

The situation deteriorated as water began to build up on the roof and cause some serious damage, forcing an evacuation of the adult cats.

A band of volunteers, staff and CEO Kristina Vesk gathered 22 cats and took them to the Sydney Animal Hospital in Stanmore.

Ms Vesk said it was a distressing situation, with the risk the roof might collapse.

“They were pretty frightened as the hailstorm was very loud,” she said.
“But we gave them a meal when they got to the hospital and the next day we moved the other cats from downstairs to Concord Hospital to be super cautious.”

The building has been assessed and the organisation has been told the ceiling is unsafe and must be replaced. Quotes are being arranged to undertake repairs.

In the meantime the society is continuing to care for cats with illness, injury or emotional trauma in their recovery ward in Newtown. They also have kittens available for adoption from their ground floor units.
But while they are waiting for the repairs, people who wish to adopt a cat can make an appointment to see them at Sydney Animal Hospital. Details: catprotection.org.au
